Mass And Weight

Mass And Weight

Mass

  • Mass is an intrinsic property of all matter
  • It is a scalar quantity
  • It is a measure of the tendency to resist change in motion.
  • SI unit is kilogram (kg)

Weight

  • Weight is a measure of the gravitational force on a mass
    • Consequently, weight on Earth will differ from that on another planet
    • Even though the mass will remain the same
  • It is a vector quantity
  • It is determined by the relationship
    • where is the acceleration due to gravity
    • is also defined as the gravitational field strength
    • on Earth’s surface is
  • SI unit is m/s² or

Measurement of Weight and Mass

  • W = M_{1} \times g = M_{2} \times g
  • By adding masses in small increments to M_{1} until it balances M_{2} completely, we can determine the mass M_{2}.
