Pressure

Pressure

  • Pressure is defined as the force acting on an object per unit area.
  • P= \frac{\textup{force}}{\textup{area}}
    • where P is the pressure in Pascals
    • F is the force in N
    • A is the area in m^{2}
  • It is a scalar quantity
  • SI unit of Pa or N/m^{2}
  • The pressure created by a large heavy box can be the same as a tiny needle despite the large difference in the force exerted.
    • P_{Box} = \frac{1000 N}{1m^{2}} = 1000 Pa
    • P_{Needle} = \frac{10 N}{0.01m^{2}} = 1000 Pa
